Nestled on the R307 between the Darling hills and the cool breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, Contreberg was one of the farms originally established in the early 1800s by the Dutch East India Company to supply passing shipswith fresh meat and produce. Darling is world renowned for its spring flower show and the farm is one which boasts a magnificent display of wildflowers in springtime including the famous Darling Ivory Orchid (Pterygodium Cruciform). The Darling Ivory is unique in that it is one of a few highly select species of flowering plants that does not secrete nectar to attract its pollinator - instead it secretes oil.
Wine grape production on the farm started towards the end of the decade and the famous woodfired Roosterkoek pairing can be enjoyed every weekend together with the award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé. The farm is abuzz with visitors for tastings, weddings and events in the beautiful venue with the option of an overnight stay in the original manor house. Bask in the spring sunshine amongst the rolling hills and take in the flowers, the vines and wines and leave behind the winter that was.
Contreberg Wine Farm is on the R307, 7,6kms from Darling.
